Tanzania Ginger: Sourcing Guide

Overview

Ginger is named in Tanzania’s government-linked spice-sector priority cluster (alongside cloves, pepper, cinnamon and cardamom) and has the richest qualitative story of the “other spices” — a clearly identified leading district, two live named-buyer market-development deals — but its production-volume figures disagree by one to two orders of magnitude across the sources we could find, and we report that disagreement rather than resolving it.

Growing Regions

Same District, in Kilimanjaro Region on the slopes of the Eastern Arc/South Pare mountains, is repeatedly identified as Tanzania’s leading ginger-growing area, with press reporting crediting it with up to 70% of national output and a stated production capacity of 14,500 metric tonnes annually. Ginger is also grown in Ruvuma, Kigoma, Tanga, Morogoro, Coast and Mbeya regions, with Tanga specifically cited by the Tanzania Spices Association as a sourcing region.

Market Development — Two Live Buyer Relationships

Smallholder farmers in Mamba Miamba village, Same District, have sold ginger to Akida Group Ltd. (a subsidiary of a Ukrainian trading firm), with the buyer reportedly seeking roughly two containers per week for the Ukrainian and Western European market. Separately, a Kenyan buyer working through a Tanzanian intermediary has been reported seeking up to 200 tonnes per month of Tanzanian ginger. We report these as documented buyer-development activity, not as evidence of a settled, high-volume export channel.

Production Data — An Unresolved Three-Way Disagreement

Three sources give production estimates that differ by roughly one to two orders of magnitude: one citation (attributed to FAOSTAT 2015 data) suggests national output fell from around 60,000 tonnes in 2008/09 to a much lower level by the early 2010s; a separate FAOSTAT-attributed commercial citation gives roughly 1,100 tonnes for 2022; and a third aggregator-derived figure gives just 126 tonnes on 54 hectares for 2019. None of these were independently verified against FAOSTAT’s own database directly, and we are not able to say which, if any, is currently accurate. We are publishing this profile because the qualitative and trade-relationship material is genuinely well-documented — not because the production figure is resolved.

Current Pricing

Retail pricing (commercial aggregator data, September 2026, methodology not fully disclosed): roughly $2.21–4.99/kg (TZS 5,259–11,891/kg) in Dar es Salaam and Mwanza; wholesale roughly $1.55–3.50/kg. Named export markets include Rwanda, Burundi, Kenya, Malawi and France.
